Delta Capita do everything we can to encourage employee success and wellbeing. This includes supporting women’s careers and aspirations in the workplace.

Becky Ferrer Escriva, manager at Delta Capita, reflects on some of her experiences working in financial services after participating in the Baytree Centre’s Inspirational Women Career Panel in London.

I was recently privileged to join four other successful women from different backgrounds on an Inspirational Women Career Panel to discuss our journeys, careers, motivations and challenges.

The event was run by Baytree Centre, an educational charity for women and girls focusing on education, training, and employability. The centre aims to enhance confidence and self-esteem, promote aspirations and opportunities, and improve the lives of over 600 women and girls.

The event was held at Baytree’s premises in Brixton, London, where we were received by their warm and friendly staff, and by a group of inquisitive girls and women that wanted to hear our stories and advice. As the session progressed and everyone relaxed, questions started flowing – here are a few of them with my answers.

Were you afraid of working in a male-dominated environment and do you have any advice about this?

Financial services have always carried the stigma of being heavily male dominated. That was an accurate perception in the past. But in the last five years, there has been a major turnaround. It has become a diversified environment and there are some females in top roles.

My advice is not to fear men or see them as an enemy. We can all work in harmony and find a balance.

My mentor and managers at Delta Capita are mostly men. But I have a female managers too, including my career manager, and that combination helps empower me to be successful and make the best of my capabilities. I feel the same about the management team at my client site.

Do you regret any choices you have made throughout your career?

I don’t regret any of my choices because, if I hadn’t made them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I did have an illness that dictated most of my choices for a period. I would like to thank my safety net at DC – including my managers, peers and reportees - who cared so much for my wellbeing.

As a foreigner, how long did it take you to learn to speak and write fluent English?

I came to this country in my twenties and attended an English school. I worked as a receptionist at a hotel, which helped me practice what I learnt at school and build confidence. I have never stopped - every day is a learning day.

This question was asked by a wonderful lady who was a Ukrainian refugee. She had superb English after being in this country for only three months. We gave her a warm clap for her achievement and courage.

We wrapped up the panel with a vibrant tone. The speakers agreed that, with perseverance and hard work, we can accomplish anything we set our minds to. Though the journey may be difficult, it will be worth it.

Reinventing support

Delta Capita want our employees to feel included, regardless of their background. We support and encourage staff to develop their careers, and to devote time to their physical and mental wellbeing too.

Employees that feel supported in these ways generally feel healthier, happier, and have more sense of belonging and engagement at work.
